WHERE DID THIS COME FROM?????

So Meryl’s last film if you remember was an oscar nominated performance in factual-aussie-drama involving grief, court cases and what we have all come to expect from a Streepy performance. Tears, accents, DRAMA.

THIS!!?

Where did this come from?

Obviously Meryl, having won 2 oscars and gotten a name for herself as a solid powerhouse actress felt she still had something to prove and that was:

COMEDY

The Film :

Ruth (Roseanne Barr) (I know) is a wife and mother who cannot seem to be able to please her disreputable accountant husband. When he starts to have an affair with rich and famous romance novelist Mary Fisher (Streep), Ruth sets about to DESTROY him and reek revenge. She slowly works her way to ruin his and Mary’s life by systematically destroying the assets he has listed he has…

From A Cry in the Dark to this is like a shower suddenly changing temperature.

I mean look, look at this face!

And this!

Ok… calm down. Meryl had previously done a comedic turn in Heartburn and even Falling in Love but both those you could label as ‘Dramadeys’. This is broad broad broad. Comedy comedy comedy. For one Mary Fisher looks and lives like a barbie doll, Streep is all pink and big blonde hair, huge pink mansion and pink nails.

There is nothing subtle about this performance. Of course this film demands anything but. Lets just say it: the film is rubbish, ridiculous and FAB.

Streepy really goes hell for leather and whilst yes this is not Woody Allen or Nora Ephron humour, Meryl is hilairiously camp VERY OTT and does very well in stealing the show from Roseanne (who for some reason looks pretty uncomfortable throughout the whole film).

If it wasn’t for another film like this to come I would be surprised that this hasn’t become a cult classic with the camp lovers of this world. Meryls comic timing is genius and yes the film as a whole is a bit meh but I would quite happily spend an afternoon fastforwarding to Streeps scenes.

large-1

Meryl has said the experience of making this film wasn’t a good one mainly down to the director. It looks as though she is having A LOT of fun though. Is she going a bit too far…? Maybe, but the film does call for it and because of it she is the best thing about it.

No oscar nods here obvs although she was nominated for best comedy performance at the golden globes.

I did I have to say feel sorry for Mary Fisher! Although I am IN LOVE with her comeback look at the end:

This marked the beginning of a string of hollywood comedies which saw her into her 40’s bursting into mainstream cinema.

She-Devil. A very silly movie. But such a blast from what we’ve seen before. Is this what happens to everyone when they hit 40?
